My reading list for the summer included many books that I am familiar with (through other media) but, embarrasingly have never read.

I attempted to correct some of these glaring ommissions with the following books...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Animal Farm - George Orwell
Everyone is, of course, familiar with Orwell's whimsical satire of the Communist Revolution in Russia. I, for one, have seen it portrayed in many media but never, in fact, ever took the opportunity to read the book.
Overall, it was enjoyable but there were portions of it that left me a little cold.
One portion of the book that ruined it for me was the scene with the mass conffessions (of crimes that never happened) and then the very public and lethal retribution for said crimes.
I thoroughly get the mass hysteria that was being portrayed and the reason for the "false confessions" but after the very public and brutal executions that took place after each, the animals would have stopped volunteering confessions to things that had never happened.
I would have understood it if these confessions had been coerced out of them but, the way it's written, the confessions seem to spontaneously erupt in the moment of hysterical fervor.
That one scene ruined the book for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Catcher In The Rye - J.D. Salinger

I completely understand why this book is so popular with teenaged boys. The self-disenfranchised youth that is the protagonist rings a harmonic chord with readers who, themselves, are trying to discover their own place in the world.

As a grown man reading this book, I just wanted to reach into the book, bitch-slap the main character and tell him to "Get over himself!"

Definately not the best book of the bunch for me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Slaugherhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
WTF ?!?
Obviously expecting a book about the P.O.W. experience in WWII, I was more than a little taken aback by the central story-line of the time-travelling space-aliens.
But, seriously, it's a pretty good book.
Read it with an open mind, and understand how it became such a well-respected classic.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell

What can be said about this book that hasn't been said already.

This book has had such an impact on so many people that the vernacular of the book ("Double-Speak", "Big Brother", etc.) have actually become part of regular vocabulary.

If you haven't read this book, you should.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
The counter-point to Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World portrays yet another method for maintaining stability in a society.
Whereas Nineteen Eighty-Four manages it by keeping people focused on the baser necessities, Brave New World does it by keeping people focused on being perpetually satiated. I won't use the words "happy" or "satisfied"...for reasons that become obvious once you read the book.
One common link in both books, however, is "consumption". In both books, consumption is crucial to maintaining a stable economy. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, this is acheived through perpetual, never-ending warfare. In Brave New World, it's achieved by mandating consumption through excess.
When read directly after Nineteen Eighty-Four, one can't help but compare and contrast the two methods of government. Both keep their people imprisoned. In one the prison is dark, grey and cold, like iron. In the other, the prison is a gilded cage filled with bright and shiny things.
If you haven't read either of these books, I highly suggest you do so by reading them one right after the other and then reflected back on our own society over the past 100 years of so.
Heck, just look back over the last 20-30 years. In the 1980's and 1990's when materialism and spending was lord and master, we were well on our way to Huxley's Brave New World. Now, in our post-nine-eleven world of Homeland Security, one wonders if Big Brother really is watching...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lord Of The Flies - William Golding

Okay...so EVERYONE knows this story...

Back when I was in school, of course we were supposed to read it...but I never actually finished reading it.

So, even though I know what happens, I figured it was about time I actually read the whole thing from cover to cover.

Definately a book that every young adolescant should read.

My only worry is that the youth of today would more readily relate to Jack and his tribe rather than the more level-headed Ralph.

With the ever-increasing lack of discipline both in our schools and in our homes, and negative celebrity role-models, I see the youth of today becoming more-and-more, a nation of "Jack"s.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heat Wave - Richard Castle
After hearing so much about this book on television, I figured it was about time to read it for myself.
Yes, yes, I know that Richard Castle is only a made-up character but reading this fictional author's fictionalized version of the lives of himself and his fellow fictionalized characters was a real hoot.
Not only do they provide an intriguing murder mystery worthy of the TV show (fully of Castle-worthy plot twists and turns) but the "fictionalized" versions of the cast of characters were written similar enough to make you feel like you were watching an episode of Castle, while being different enough and filled with enough cheezy dialogue (that the "real" characters would never use) to make it distinct as being written by "Richard Castle".
In particulary was the Richard Castle knock-off, Jameson Rook.
What I liked about the use of Rook is that, while he had Castle's wit and humor, he was even more of a pretentious name-dropper than Castle ever was and has nowhere near the sleuthing skills that Castle does. In the end Nikki Heat, the Kate Beckett clone, sleuths circles around Rook who is left guessing who the murderer is long after the case has been solved.
Rook is such an incidental -- and annoying -- character, I think I would have enjoyed this book even more without Rook in it (as opposed to Castle whose chemistry with Beckett makes the show) if it wasn't for his presence being required for the sex scenes.
After all, we can't count on a naked Nikki Heat chasing down her perps in all of her books, now can we? :wink:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~

Next on my readling list...

Night Of The Living Trekkies!!!
(no, seriously, that's the title...)

Liz & the kids have to make the yearly pilgrimage up to the Hamilton branch of the Kalapos family's cottage on Sturgeon Lake, and we Can't Find a Dog Sitter for Bella :thumbdown: so I gotta stay home.

Mind you it's not 100% certain but I'd say its at least 85% chance of being home alone. So If I do get stuck home anybody interested in getting together, and doing something?
I'm very impressed with the mechanics, but I've got a couple of problems I'm stuck on.

The player characters are all Star Sapphires, and the focus is on the wars of light, so power rings are obviously a big concern. I'm having some trouble understanding the limits of the Create power. I need the Lanterns to be able to do fairly complex constructs (functional guns, spacecraft, medical equipment, etc.) as is fairly common in Green Lantern Corps these days. Unless I'm reading it incorrectly, Create doesn't allow for that. In fact, about all you seem to be able to do is drop things on people.
Now not every Lantern will have the Imagination to Build a Surgical theater or other complex devices on a constant basis so they wouldn't necessarily have the precise extra but could access it as necessary with the use of a power stunt. Hal doesn't have it (Precise) but John Stewart who is an architect by trade most likely would.

Soranik Natu is already a skilled surgeon so the surgical theater she created is really only a manifestation of the Ring Scanning functions as well as the AI's Link to central power battery data banks, as well as a combination of Simple & Precise constructs / tools. The Surgical Theater Force Construct's Purpose was to place her in a familiar environment that would allow her to exploit the ring's functions to exercise her already considerable surgical skill.
A Blaster Rife is a Manifestation of the rings force blast Power.
Power Armour Likewise a Manifestation of the Force Field and Lifting
and Ultrasound machine certainly ( it just scanning after all )

In one of my D&D 4th edition campaigns which I'm running the module "Thunderspire Labyrinth" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderspire_Labyrinth , my players were chasing some slavers.

Word had spread that they were searching for slaversin the area. A merchant (secretly a doppelganger spy for duergar slavers whom the party had yet to hear about) approched the party and offered them a caravan duty job to get them out of the area. The party refused since they wanted to rescue the slaves. So, during the night, the goblin NPC henchmen that the group befriended in "Keep on the Shadowfell" got a bit too greedy and went to see the merchant. The doppelganger killed the goblin and took his shape. He followed the party pretending to be the goblin till an appropriate time while they were fighting the duergar he turned on them.

Being heroes, the party managed to defeat him but they knocked him out. They woken him up and interrogated the doppelganger and found out about the operation. Rather than kill him, they managed to strike a bargain with him to have him lead them to the duergar clan leader as slave buyers, they asked him to get out of slavery but he can go into other business. Under the guise of the duergar clan leader's brother, the party was lead to the clan leader. They were going to get to see the slaves when one of the PC showed his emotional attachment for a known slave and her distate of slavery (player rolled 1 on bluff). The duergar clan leader figured out something was wrong and battle ensued. The doppelganger (still in his disguise) claimed he'll get reinforcement and left the battle.

The doppelganger went to the other duergar that the party had intelligently avoided and told them the leader has been killed by adventurers and they need to grab their stuff and leave. He told them to leave the slaves behind. So while the party fought the leader and freed the slaves, the doppelganger was hurrying to get as much stuff to get out. I had decided that it would take the duergar around 2 hours to grab their supplies and leave. So when the party decided to cast a spell to transfer a magical enchantment from one magical item to another which has a casting time of 1 hour, I had about 1/2 of the remaining duergar left.

The party opened the door to see the duergar about to leave with stuff. They saw the doppelganger (still in his guise). A brief battle ensued, somre orcs with hand axes were first, they prepared to launch axes at them if one attacked. The archer in party attacked and was attacked. Luckily, the doppelganger had won initiation amongst the duergar melee and approached the party. He attacked them to keep his guise and whispered to them "what the hell are you doing?!?" Brief discussion happened and the group remembered their deal with the doppelganger and decided to honour it even though they would lose out on treasure and because they have the slaves they are rescuing.

So now I have a doppelganger pretending to be a duergar who is going to lead a clan of duergar into crime. :) He'll still maintain his merchant guise since he has his contacts through that.

Boy, I love dungeon politics. :)

City of Heroes: Going Rogue / Shades of Grey

In...

The latest expansion in the CoH Universe, "Going Rogue" is the first step to true action-and-consequences role-playing on the Internet.

In Going Rogue, you start off the game as a new recruit working for the Utopian government of the Praetorian homeworld.

For those of you who have played CoH in the past you should be aware of who the Praetorians are. The Praetorians are "evil" Mirror/Mirror type dopplegangers of the leading super-heroes of the City of Heroes Universe.

In past story-lines, Statesman's counterpart in an alternate reality (Statesman is CoH's leading Super Hero; a cross between Captain America and Superman) used his amazing abilities to set up himself and his super-human allies as the sole governing power of their world. Dropping his "Statesman" name, he crowned himself Emperor Cole; although the resistance renamed him Tyrant instead.

Having crushed most of the resistance on their homeworld, The Praetorians could be encounted on various high-level missions (when your character has gained enough experience) as the ultimate Uber-bosses to fight as they attempt to get a foot-hold in the City of Heroes reality.

Revamping the story just a little, Going Rogue is set in a variation of The Praetorian homeworld with just slight modifications to the back-story.

Now, Statesman's motives were initially noble in sentiment. After the horrors of the Hamidon Wars, Statesman's home city was one of the few pockets of civilization that survived the wars. The rest of the world was descending into lawless barbarism. In order to preserve mankind, Statesman declared himself Emporer in order to preserve and protect mankind -- as he saw fit!

Jump ahead several years and Statesman's new world is a Utopia of sorts with gleaming spires of steel and glass stretching to the sky and street crime virtually all but eliminated.

But for anyone who has read 1984 or Brave New World, Utopia -- or at least societal stability -- comes with a price.

Underneath the streets of Neutropolis, are the lost and forgotten. The ones that don't fit in, in Emperor Cole's Brave New World. From among these brave souls rise the resistance.

The dream of the resistance is to overthrow Emperor Cole and free the people of Praetoria from Cole's oppressive regime.

When you start the game, as someone with extraordinary abilities, you are a new recruit to the Loyalist "Powers Division". One of your first assignments, however, is to go undercover as a member of the resistance. Once underground, you are contacted and asked to act as a spy and pose as a loyalist.

From that point on, you are caught in a power-struggle between these two organizations. At this point, your fate is in you hands. Do you infiltrate the Resistance for the Loyalists? Do you infiltrate the Loyalists for the Resistance?

As a resistance member, are you willing to plant nerve gas bombs throughout the city in an attempt to create a diversion for a jail-break to free political prisoners?

As a Loyalist, can you bring yourself to pummel peaceful protestors in order to protect the Utopian society that Emperor Cols has built?

Every interaction and every choice you make will dictate your role in the game. You can become a Loyalist but, based on your actions, you can slowly slide over to become identified as a Rebel. Or vice-versa. Your role, and the reactions of the NPCs around you (and the missions you receive) will change accordingly.

You can start out playing with someone and, based on the choices you both make, you could end up as mortal enemies. Or you could start out on opposite sides and end up working together.

I think it's a pretty cool concept.

So do the designers as well, who have also integrated the concept into the next free upgrade to CoH/CoV: Shades of Grey.

Things just got a whole lot more interesting (and a little more realistic) in the world of Super-Hero MMORPGs.

This is no more black and white. There are only shades of Grey.

Oh yeah...and it all started about 5 days ago! :mrgreen:
