JMS did a great job of rebooting the character since Thor and all of the other Asgardians were destroyed when Thor broke the cycle of Ragnorak.

Thor managed to survive by way of his human half, Donald Blake.

I particularly liked how Iron Man showed up to get Thor to register (during the SHRA era of Marvel) and Thor promptly kicked his ass and sent him packing.

'Course this was when Thor carried the power of Odin which he used to A) recreate Asgard in Oklahoma; B) resurrect the Norse Gods; and C) re-forge Mjolnir after it was shattered battling Bor, Thor's own grandfather.

Without taking the Odinsleep (as Odin often did) to replenish the power, Thor depleted it all. Now he's just Thor again. He's not even Lord of Asgard any more as he had to renounce his title when he was tricked by Loki into killing his Grandfather. Patricide is an unforgivable sin amongst the Asgardians and Thor was cast out of Asgard, leaving Balder (a previously-unrevealed bastard son of Odin) as King of Asgard.

JMS has since left the title but the current writer is doing a fairly decent job of keeping the story focused on the reborn Asgardians & Nordic lore rather than the trumped-up super-hero battles that plagued Thor titles in days gone by.
