Exclamation Too much meta not enough wonder, no?

OK, so in the wake of Gamers World folding and Roludo starting and Draconis and the other one that used to be the McGill Gamer Guild, where are the games?

Is the frustration I am feeling, maybe (and please this is a big maybe) akin to Midnight's withdraw from games, because there is so much meta talk and supposition and not enough of that original WOW that comes with going into a game world and getting in character and not caring about all this arranging and critiquing.

Ok, whoa before you blast me, because I have thought about not posting this. Please consider that I am newly returning to gaming and want to get my game on and one of the only things that seemed possible was Dark Sun in Ottowa (which I can't get to). Also, I recognize that this is a transitional period of school/work to summer and while most of you were probably balancing school/work with games during the winter, I was spearfishing in the San Blas Archipelago and surfing in San Juan Del Sur. So I have really no excuse to bitch.... Plus, for now I just want to be a gamer, so also I realize if I want something done "right" I have to host my own campaign.

I will still post this because, as I surf the internet and these posts for games, I find a ton of interesting conversations, but the magic fairy dust of gaming wonder is just not detectable. Can anyone teach me this cantrip? I forgot it?

Respectfully with great gratitude that I have a place to post this spontaneous inquiry.

Again please at least set your phasers to stun or irresistable hideous laughter and not on full flaming scorch after burn. I will gladly accept a "cool your jets dude".

Yours impatiently,

Zatchel

Zatchel,

The reality is that it takes time to find an actual game. This has been one of the biggest changes in the gaming world in the last ten years. We are all getting older with more responsibilities and it gets harder and harder to actually get together.

On top of that, Montreal has a pretty fractured gaming scene. We're working on bringing it together, but we have a long way to go.

As you can see, we organized a gameday last month that was pretty succesful. Roludo is going to organize another one sometime in June and Draconis is having gamedays as well. So there are opportunities.

But it's hard. Just for instance, I read your post of your gaming style over on Roludo and I thought, I would love to invite this guy into my game. But guess what, I don't have time to run any of the 7 awesome campaign ideas bouncing around in my head right now.

The best thing to do is go to the gamedays, try out some games and get to know some people and their playstyles and then start scheming to get into a group or get your own going. I suspect that after this summer, there will be a few new groups forming. I have heard a few voices like yours out there.

I totally hear and sympathize with your impatience. I'm just trying to re-adjust your expectations. Believe me, we aren't replacing actual gaming with online meta-talk. We're meta-talking because we can't actually game as much as we'd like!

So be patient, keep your sticks in the fire and stay alert. The opportunities will come!

Zatchel, I hear you. Where is the wonder the awe of gaming? We do indeed talk a whole lot about it and yet do very little about games.

Well first off welcome to Midnight's Lair. We do have a few games going and if you allow most of us time to get to know you I'm sure we'll find something for you to be able to find that sense of adventure and wonder again.

Red face

Keeping it simple... you guys are great.
I hear you... I am straight up impatient and it has nothing to do with the condition I find the Montreal game scene to be in.
Ok, maybe it does a bit, but I am using it as a reflection, or using it to reflect my needs. I declared my needs and wants as a gamer on Roludo...
I did that in the meantime while I was waiting to get activated here. So again my impatience, and I guess I sort of figured everyone was transitioning. Bref, whatever.
Let's put it this way: I grew up an American, since I have also become Canadian and French. On the American side I learned how to demand things in an arrogant fashion and get the ball rolling. As a Canadian I learned to temper it and be more considerate with my way of asking for things and learned to get in line better - better mind you. On the French side I learned how to be more emotional and "bloody" (this would be the south Mediterranean latin side of things) and NOT get worried about winning an argument (American intellect!) as much as just expressing myself. The key to being bloody is that although in the moment it is heated, nobody takes things too personally. This is a great part of having a French family and understanding the French. This is why they perceive Americans to be arrogant and not themselves. Anyway before I digress too much, I see myself coming with a sort of three prong trident of trying to stir stuff up and although it is mostly about self-preservation/satisfaction, if done respectfully enough can be a catalyst.

The bonus about working with, posting to and being around Canadians is that they are so patient and freakin cool!

So there it is. I will end with a joke:
How do you get 20 Canadians out of your pool?
